Third Grade
Third Grade part 1
Third Grade Part 2
A major focus in the life of a third grade student is on reading and math skills. Of course spelling, writing/grammar, handwriting, Social Studies, and Science lessons are included throughout the day/week. Our school has a new program this year called Accelerated Reading to help with reading comprehension skills. Students check out books according to their reading levels. They have a choice to either read the books independently, with a partner, or listen to the teacher read aloud the story. When finished they use the computer to take a comprehension test. Several of our students spend an hour daily with Mrs. Windham’s Spell, P.A.T. Read program. Our classrooms also contain a tape assisted reading program which helps students with fluency in reading. Twice a week students go to the computer labs to work on their reading skills using the Compass Learning Odyssey website. And, students are using the Harcourt Trophies reading texts based on their reading level in the classroom which focuses on phonics, grammar, reading skills, vocabulary, and comprehension. Our math curriculum is another large focus of our day. Many skills are covered some of which include telling time, money, probability, capacity, multiplication, division, etc. To round out our day students also attend one or two of the following specials each day: Physical Education, Science Lab, Art, Music, or Computer Labs.
